The Majorelle Garden (or Jardin Majorelle to give its correct French name) is a tranquil oasis in the city of Marrakesh with lily filled ponds, fountains and thousands of plants from palm trees, hibiscus, jasmine, fig trees, cypress, oleanders, orange and banana trees, bougainvillea, coconut palms, agave, yucca to bamboo groves and many types of cactus.
The gardens were originally established by the French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920’s around his house painted in a vibrant cobalt blue colour with a blend of Moroccan and art deco styles.
Yves Saint Laurent visited the gardens many times and when the gardens and the house fell into disrepair YSL and his partner Pierre Bergé purchased the property in the 1980’s, preventing it from being converted into a hotel, and refurbished the site including introducing new plant species that can be seen today.
The property and gardens are immaculately presented and is an absolute must visit on your trip to Morocco.
Tickets to enter must be purchased online prior to your arrival to secure a date and time slot to suit you and you can buy an entry, at the same time, to the Yves Saint Laurent museum which is just a short walk down from the gardens.
Whether you are a fashionista or not a visit to the Yves Saint Laurent museum is recommended. There are regular exhibitions such as the permanent display from Hamish Bowles as well as temporary displays from previous YSL collections and a gallery of YSL artwork.
