Burano

Burano

Burano is a colourful small fishing island town in the Venetian lagoon 7 miles / 11 km from Venice and this once hidden gem is a must to visit.

The town can be easily reached via a 45 minute Vaparetto (Water Taxi) on the Line 12 boat from Fondamente Nove (F.te Nove) which also stops at Murano and you can easily visit both islands within one day. Check out our main Italy page on Getting Around Venice for details on ticket costs and where to get them.

Burano has a population of around 3000 with three canals and is oozing with character and charm especially on a beautiful clear day when the colourful houses can be seen in their full splendour.

Just a few hours are needed to wander the island which has a relaxed feel about it but some great restaurants with amazing fresh seafood and a variety of boutique shops featuring locally handcrafted goods like venetian masks and lace which Burano is world famous for.

Aside from the picturesque buildings and cobbled paths Burano also has its own leaning tower! The bell tower, built in the 17th century and standing at a height of 53 meters, leans nearly two metres due to land subsidence (Pisa’s leaning tower is 57 metres high and leans at nearly 5 metres).

Burano is a lovely little island to visit and one particular restaurant we have to recommend is Trattoria Al Gatto Nero. Amazing food, next to the picturesque canal and the best place to try the famous Venetian risotto da go and we recommend you book well in advance just to ensure you get a table. Trust us when we say you can wine and dine the day away there!
