The Ancient Agora

The Ancient Agora

A must see on your visit to Athens and where you should set aside some good time to wander is the Ancient Agora which is a large site and one of the most important of the Greek capital located northwest of the Acropolis between the neighborhoods of Thissio and Monastiraki. Entrance is included in the multi-pass via Headout or Hellenic Heritage or you can buy tickets at the site. You don’t need to book a timed slot.

The Ancient Agora has many ancient ruins and greenery and is a place where political gatherings and juries would take place. Within the Ancient Agora you can get close to the Temple of Hephaestus which is one of the best preserved temples in Athens and visit the large Stoa of Attalos. This is an impressive long building in the Agora site originally constructed in 159 BC but since beautifully restored that provides some much welcome shade in the summer but where you can get up close to marble statues, ancient coins, ceramic vases, ancient items of daily use and weapons.

Options for guided private or group tours of the Ancient Agora site are recommended through Get Your Guide.

After a bust day of touring ancient sites we recommend a little more upmarket dining option at Zillers Roof Garden. It has stunning views over the Acropolis, amazing food and an Olive Bar where you are given a small printed map of Greece on which five locations are marked; Alexandroupoli, Crete, Corfu, Corinth and Mytilene. A short description under each location provides information on each of the five olive oils you can sample each paired with three different types of homemade bread. Delicious!
