If you’re travelling in the summer have a morning start for a trip to the Acropolis and to the Parthenon. The multi-pass ticket online via Headout or Hellenic Heritage are the recommended options as they give a timed entry. There is a ticket booth near the site but there can be long queues and a time of entry into the Acropolis might not be til later in the day. Summer months are obviously busier than the cooler months so an early morning trip here is recommended in the summer to avoid the crowds and the heat. If you are here in the summer we recommend a small umbrella to provide some shade and the rechargeable fans are a must. You can meander around the site for an hour or two with fantastic views across the city and information boards on the amazing ancient structures dating back to 400BC. There is ongoing maintenance as you can expect with scaffolding and cranes but they don’t diminish the awe of the site and the structures.
On the Acropolis you can also visit the The Temple of Athena Nike and the impressive Odeon of Herodes Atticus which is the oldest theatre in the world and is the main venue of the Athens Festival which runs from May through October each year featuring a variety of acclaimed Greek as well as International performances. If you are visiting Athens during this period be sure to attend a performance in this spectacular setting. Further details including festival events and bookings can be found at AE Festival.
Spend the rest of the day wandering the city, try the Koulouri bread, Ntkaos salad, exquisite coffee and purchase all the herbs, spices, nuts and cheeses from the many market stalls. If you need any other tips on traditional Greek foods to try check out This Is Athens.
Dining in Athens you are spoilt for choice and can rarely go wrong but highly recommended dining is at Klimataria. A traditional Greek restaurant with excellent traditional food and entertainment.
