Within a few minutes walk from the historical centre, where we recommend the AirBnB, you arrive at the amazing Panathenaic Stadium, also known as the Olympic Stadium, which you can see very clearly from the outside.
If you want to go in you can buy tickets there for £8.50 / €10 / $11.
You can’t buy tickets to enter the stadium from anywhere else except there at the ticket booths.
A further 15 minutes stroll through the National Garden you arrive at Syntagma Square where the main tram line is and nearby that is the Hellenic Parliament building where the changing of the guard takes place.
There is a daily changing of the guard every hour, which in itself is unique, but a must see is the full spectacle every Sunday at 11am which is very impressive.
About 1km easy walk on from Syntagma Square is the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
We recommend getting a multipass for the main attractions in Athens from Get Your Guide of which the entrance fees are included.
At the Temple of Zeus you can also see the Arch of Hadrian which sits unceremoniously near a roundabout near Zeus’s temple!
About a 40 min walk (or you can catch the tram from Syntagma Square to Ampelokipi) is the fish and meat market – a must see for the sights and smells of the local delicacies and a great place to select the local catch of the day.
With the many attractions to see and so much meandering around the city to do there’s one restaurant we have to recommend for dinner and that’s Roz Panthiras.
Simply amazing food, great service and we recommend the Saga Shrimp, Ribeye Bone, Greek Salad and the Greek wine ‘Clio’ – either Red, White or Rose is delicious!
A perfect way to finish off a day in Athens.
